In September 2005 the “Night of the Euregio” was founded in order to help young promising athletes on their way to the (inter)national top. Supported by the Euregional authorities, the commune Neerpelt and several sponsors, the first “Night of the Euregio” was organised on June 5th 2006 at the renewed track of the Provincial Domain Dommelhof in Neerpelt. The objective of the meeting was to offer especially to young promising athletes an opportunity to qualify for the major international championships that year, the European Championships in Göteborg and the World Championships for Juniors in Beijing. Not less than 21 young Europeans succeeded that day to qualify for one of these championships, amongst which 8 Belgians. We had 4 national records, one second best Belgian time ever and 6 Belgians managed at the 10.000m to place themselves in the Top 30 of all times. NOT BAD FOR A FIRST EDITION OF A NEW INTERNATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD MEETING that only offered what athletes had been asking for for years: a meeting at the end of May, beginning of June with a strong field of competitors. - One day later the press praised the organisation. - One week later they kept writing about the incredible the level reached. - For many years to come they will talk about that historic 10.000m at the end of the meeting. THE DECISION TO ORGANISE THIS MEETING AGAIN IN 2007 (2ND JUNE) COULD NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE REFRAINED. The objective for 2007 is to offer as much athletes as possible the chance to qualify for the European Athletics U23 Championships Debrecen (H), the European Athletics Junior Championships in Hengelo and the Universiade in Bangkok. The calibre of the competitors will be that high that qualifications for the World Championships in Osaka should be possible. Our 2007 edition, therefore, promises to be one of the most important meetings of Europe. |
